SD Wates III

A bamboo building without floor tiles having three classrooms and a teacher room stood with a pride in Dipan, a kampong in Wates, to the west of Yogyakarta City. In the yards, during the break ("umbar") children were happily playing kasti or baseball, yeye, kubuk. No one was wearing school-uniform, nobody was wearing shoes. In back of the school building, there came an elderly lady with her bamboo basket and tray some snacks such as regedeg and bandhos. There was also another one who sold "gulali".That's SD Wates III, a state-owned elementary school in 1970s.

A lady  named Suwartini or Bu Mantri  was the school principal then. She was not so tall  and had grey hair with a Javanese style called "gelungan". Bu Mantri always wore a kebaya and cloth and rode a bicycle for work. There were 10 teachers approximately; Bu Marmiati, Bu Abidah, Bu Sandiyah, Bu Ismirah, Bu Masindah, Bu Supiyah, Pak Sardjan, Pak Hartoyo.

Sutiyem, Saminem, Indriyanti, Sutarti, Sulastri, Yulianti, Suwarni, Sunartiasih, Ngatini, Dwi Astuti, Erna Dwi Astuti, Murni, Murwani, Purwaningsih, Muslam, Suyatno, Ngadiyono, Harno, Tri Waluyo, Hendarto Kusnurwahyu, Sukarni, Subari, Muryani, Kustini, Hartati, Taufik Hidayat were some students who were studying there.
